Angkor Wat… A Must See During A Mekong River Cruise!

Angkor Wat. Have you ever heard of it?

If not you’re in for a treat!

Our 1st chance to visit this Beautiful area was when we recently took a Mekong River Cruise in Vietnam & Cambodia with Uniworld River Cruises… which was amazing & one of our best Vacations ever!

We published 2 blogs recently all about our trip:

1. Highlights of our Mekong River Cruise in Vietnam & Cambodia

2. “The Experience” We Had With Uniworld River Cruises… On The Mekong River

There we are at famous “Angkor Wat” in Cambodia… what a great highlight of our Mekong River Cruise!

Today though, we wanted to tell you a little about one of the highlights of our trip, our visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat & it’s surrounding Temples in Cambodia.

1st off, where is Angkor Wat you ask?

Well, it sits just a few miles North of Siem Reap in Northwestern Cambodia.

Siem Reap is a pretty modern Cambodian
town and is where you’ll be spending your time while exploring the temples. And it’s very inexpensive there which is a plus!

We’re talking $5/hr for massages, $.50 draft beer on “Pub Street” (make sure to head there for dinner & drinks on a night or two) and $2 Tuk Tuk (an open air taxi) rides around town… let’s just say, spending a few days hanging out in Siem Reap while enjoying the Temples won’t break you! 🙂 (FYI, when doing a River Cruise in this region the Hotels in Siem Reap & tours to the Temples as well as some meals while in town are included in the cost of your trip).

So, what is Angkor Wat?

Well, 1st off, Angkor Wat is the reason why most people travel to Cambodia… it’s so important to the Country it’s even on their National Flag as well as on their local currency.

Angkor Wat is the largest Religious monument in the World, built around 900 years ago in the 12th Century by the Khmer Empire who were masters at carving limestone. They built hundreds of temples, considered some of the greatest works of art ever created… including the most sacred temple of all called Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat means “City of Temples”, which is exactly what it is… and IMPRESSIVE Temples at that! Monks still to this day worship in them daily.

Angkor Wat isn’t the only Temple in this area to explore… there are many beautiful other Temples within minutes… the nicest ones, in our opinion, being “Ta Prohm” which was made famous by Angelina Jolie’s “Tomb Raider” Movie and Angkor Thom highlighted by it’s Bayon Temple.

As you can see, Angkor Wat & it’s surrounding temples are magnificent and should be on every serious travelers “Bucket List”!

And make sure to do 2 special things while there that we did & immensely enjoyed.

We watched the sun rise over the Temples & after that rode an Elephant… pretty amazing experiences! 🙂
