Rounding out our visits to Baltic Sea cities, during an amazing Cruise we experienced several summers ago, we finished our exploration of this great region by visiting and taking in many of the things to see inย Stockholm, Sweden.
Stockholm definitely ended up being a favorite place of ours and a place we have on our list to go back to and spend more time in.
What is it we liked about Stockholm?
It’s probably all the water surrounding it as it reminds us of our home town in St. John’s, Newfoundland and our current residence for the past half decade in Vancouver, BC.
What can we say, we’re suckers for ocean side living! ๐
Plus, it’s not a hard city to fall in love with, with all the gorgeous bridges connecting the different parts of the city, the colossal of parks to enjoy at every stop & the healthy and active lifestyle that seems to be a big part of living there.
No wonder it’s been voted one of the world’s best cities to live in and visit!
And speaking of water, it is something not lacking around Stockholm which is comprised of 14 islands connected by over 4 dozen bridges.
And just east of Stockholm is the famous Stockholm Archipelago (a cluster of islands) so it only gets better if you’re a water lover as there are over 24,000 islands & islets out there to explore. (only about 1000 of them are inhabited)
Stockholm is definitely well known for it’s beauty, with its impressive buildings and amazing architecture, its abundant clean and open waterways (comprises 30% of the city), and its many parks which comprise another 30% of the city…
…not surprising, with the lack of big industry manufacturing in the area, it’s known as one of the cleanest major cities in the world… nice! ๐
By the way, like many of the other Baltic cities we visited, Stockholm is the capital of it’s country, Sweden. ย It’s also the largest Swedish city with over 850,000 residents (the most of any Scandinavian Country) and over 2 million in the surrounding Metropolitan area.
Stockholm is Sweden’s cultural (home to many theatres, over 100 museums, many art galleries & tons of restaurants), political, media and economic centre…
But of course, the reason we and many others have visited there as tourists, is to check out the beauty this city has to offer. (They have a very popular tourism industry there, which has doubled in the last 2 decades)
So what are a few things things to see in Stockholm and things you may experience when there?
Well, for starters, you’re definitely going to see amazing architecture all around like this.
And you’re definitely going to want to visit “Gamla Stan“, Stockholm’s “Old Town” area know for it’s medieval alleyways, it’s maze of cobblestone streets and archaic architecture… and it’s a great place to find a local spot for lunch as we did during our visit there.
.
After “Gamla Stan” you can consider doing what we did which was taking a boat tour around the city… remember, 30% of Stockholm is comprised of waterways so this is the perfect pace to enjoy a boat ride!! ๐
.
And if you want the fun to continue after your boat tour, make sure to visit the “Grona Lund” Amusement Park which is in the heart of Stockholm and can be seen from many parts of the city.
Oh ya, as mentioned, 30% of Stockholm is comprised of Parks & Green space so take some time to enjoy one of the abundance of places to relax and take a load off while exploring this wonderful city..
There you have it, a look at what we saw during our time in Stockholm, Sweden.
As mentioned, a Beautiful city and one of our favorites in the “Baltic Sea” region… and one we’ll definitely be making a return visit to down the road.
